Unfortunately, Jonathan has finally had to give in to the pressures of school work and cannot blog any more. In fact, he cannot attend GIFT any more either and we will miss him and his unique brand of wit. We wish him well and hope he’ll drop back in from time to time. Don’t worry, you won’t always get me blogging as we are hoping our other GIFT members and the leaders will take it in turns to come up with some interesting items to keep you entertained. For now, you get me though. Our first session back was mainly spent playing games but we did manage to get a couple of important items of business out of the way first. One was the trip to Cadbury World, eagerly anticipated and being planned as you read this. The other was to announce the winner of our new logo design brainstorming session. It was very much a unanimous decision by the GIFT leaders and congratulations go to George Wade for his winning design. We are now discussing the way forward with the logo with the website administrator (don’t want to fall foul of copyright) and the youngsters will be working on this further in the next session. We rounded the evening off with much-needed refreshment in the form of choccy biccies and hot chocolates all round. Next session is on Tuesday 29th January at 7pm in the church.

We live in a beautiful part of the country (lucky us!) and the snow makes everything look even more beautiful. Here are a selection of pictures I took today, walking around Pillerton Hersey…

Today there are many people struggling to make ends meet, folk who simply cannot manage to feed their children. They are not confined to inner cities but can be found in villages like ours. People in this situation are not always easy to identify but social workers, GPs, the Police, clergy and other professionals know who they are. Poverty of this kind can be caused by anything from a broken marriage, to redundancy or the late payment of benefits.
As a Benefice, we want to become part of the new Fosse Food Bank that will be based at Kineton and will serve a population of twenty to thirty thousand people in churches around this part of Warwickshire. It is planned that the Food Bank will be up and running by Easter and we trust that each of our churches will want to pray for the food bank, collect food to donate (there will be a list of non-perishable food that will provide a balanced diet), act as a distribution centre and possibly supply volunteers to help at the main hub in Kineton.
Only three days food is ever provided at one time and people are referred to the Food Bank by professionals and given vouchers they can redeem for food from their local distribution point. No family will receive more than three vouchers in any one crisis so that dependency is avoided.
This is a very practical way of helping the most needy in our communities and the model to be used is that of the Trussell Trust, a very experienced organisation with over 270 Food Banks operating around the country in rural and urban areas. Watch this space for more information!

Well that went quickly! Happy New Year to you all. GIFT resumes on Tuesday 15th January at 7pm in Ettington Church and we will meet every other Tuesday thereafter from 7pm-8.30pm up to and including 12th March. We have also put a date in the diary for our trip to Cadbury World on Saturday 16th March which should round the term off nicely and Jane is looking into the cost of a coach etc. We have lots planned for this term and look forward to seeing our regulars again and maybe some new faces joining us. Jane, Mark & The Steves.
